Oh man, we’re cookin’ now. This week we have added our friends Glen and Amy Chalmers from Petwants. Petwants was the featured vendor for our “Howl-O-Ween” market where customers dressed up their pets in costume for prizes. That was a blast. This Saturday we have a very special (brand new) vendor, The Sweet Life Honeybee Farm. They manage and harvest over 100 hives throughout New Hanover and Brunswick counties and offer pure, local wildlflower honey. We are going to try to entice them into putting hives on both the River Bluffs and Teachey farms. Anyone interested in honey and beehives should come out and meet Karen Edgar, the owner. We are psyched about Saturday’s market. It’s going to be seasonal, i.e. high 40s, but well worth it with possibly the most vendors we’ve ever had.
For anyone just discovering this unique market operated by Turner Family Farms, the Farm Market at River Bluffs is located on the large veranda outside Porches Cafe, inside the beautiful River Bluffs community. River Bluffs is right on the River in Castle Hayne barely eight minutes from Downtown Wilmington. On Saturdays throughout the year, we offer the same wide range of produce that we provide to our subscription produce box (CSA) clients and to our customers at the two other farmer’s markets we attend. The market often coincides with events put on by the River Bluffs development, including everything from car shows to oyster roasts and live music concerts. And, as always, market attendees can get a table at Porches to sample some of Chef Erin’s creations. Please check the River Bluffs Farm Market page on Facebook for specific dates and events, but, as always, the market is located at 1030 Chair Road, Castle Hayne, N.C. 28429. River Bluffs is a hidden gem. You’re in the right place when you see the gatehouse to the River Bluffs community. Don’t let the gate deter you, the public is always welcome!
Vendors for Saturday, January 12, 2019
The Sweet Life Honeybee Farm – NEW VENDOR!! The Edgars manage over 100 hives in Brunswick and New Hanover counties. They are certified master beekeepers with the NC State Beekeepers Association and are licensed to sell bees in North Carolina. If you want real honey, or, you want information about creating your own hives, you should take this opportunity to come out and meet the Edgars. I know Turner Family Farms will be discussing putting hives on both the River Bluffs and Teachey farms, and, I know a handful of River Bluffs residents who are interested too.
Petwants is back!!!! Bring your pets! Glen and Amy deliver pet food and treats to pet lovers throughout the greater Wilmington area. Do you ever wonder what’s in your pet’s food and treats? You don’t have to. Glen and Amy use only the purest of ingredients like chicken, duck and whitefish, and they provide all the nutritional information up front. They can even create a custom meal plan for your pet. Oh, and the treats…..the treats are just as nutritious and make you feel like you are treating your pet to something real and authentic, not a doggy candy bar. I can’t come up with enough good things to say about our Petwants buddies. Great stuff.
Turner Family Farms – Ian and Jessicca will be at the market with the same items our CSA subscription produce box clients received on Thursday (more or less 🙂 carrots with tops, turnips, beets with tops, collards, greens mixes and microgreens, rainbow chard, dino kale, daikon radish with tops, sweet potatoes green onion, green tomatoes and a few ripe tomatoes – yes I said red ripe TFF tomatoes.
Feast for the Gods – Chefs Alexis and Betsy Fouros are our mainstay at the River Bluffs Farm Market offering Greek and Mediterranean delicacies every week. They always have their famous spice rubs, cookbooks and baklava, but this week they are bringing more sausages, pastitsio, and spanikopita. Oh baby, those last three make a perfect lunch for Farmer Steve – and then some.
Cape Fear Pirate Candy – Tara Moore is back this week for sure!! She and Travis make the most amazing salsas and candied peppers. Try the Candied Habanero Bacon Salsa and Honey Kissed Candied Banana Peppers. You can eat them with chips or do what I do and use them in other dishes like tuna fish salad. I’ve even made 45 second (prep time) pot roast by dumping a big bone-in chuck roast into a crock pot and covering it with two jars of Tara’s salsa. I was expecting to get a reasonably palatable result, but instead, got one of the most amazing pot roasts I’ve ever tasted. It was the Cape Fear Pirate Candy magic.
Vineyards on the Scuppernong – Sarah Barbee is new to the River Bluffs Farm Market, but she wowed a lot of people last Saturday with her family’s selection of wines. We met her at the Poplar Grove Plantation’s Merry Little Christmas Festival. In addition to the muscadine wines famous in Eastern North Carolina, Sara offers some exceptional dry wines as well including a Merlot that I highly recommend.
The PVC Bird Lady – Julie is a Southport resident that creates clever and imaginative bird forms out of PVC. They are so unique that you just have to come see them for yourself at the market.
Bonardi-Allen Glass Art – Lauren Bonardi- Allen returning, too! She is an exceptional art-glass maker who has been featured at the Cameron Art Museum. I’ll get proper pictures of her work for next week’s post.
