The River Bluffs Farm Market is Back Every Saturday for 2019

January 1st, 2019 | Posted By: Stephen Douglass | Posted in Farmers Markets

After meeting with over a dozen local vendors including food artisans, ceramic artists, painters, baked goods chefs, wine vendors, and more, River Bluffs and Turner Family Farms have decided to re-open the River Bluffs Farm Market full-time.  So, beginning January 5th, 2019, the River Bluffs Farm Market will be open every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.

For anyone just discovering this unique market operated by Turner Family Farms, the Farm Market at River Bluffs is located on the large veranda outside Porches Cafe, inside the beautiful River Bluffs community.  River Bluffs is right on the River in Castle Hayne barely eight minutes from Downtown Wilmington.  On Saturdays throughout the year, we offer the same wide range of produce that we provide to our subscription produce box (CSA) clients and to our customers at the two other farmer’s markets we attend.   The market often coincides with events put on by the River Bluffs development, including everything from car shows to oyster roasts and live music concerts.  And, as always, market attendees can get a table at Porches to sample some of Chef Erin’s creations.  Please check the River Bluffs Farm Market page on Facebook for specific dates and events, but, as always, the market is located at 1030 Chair Road, Castle Hayne, N.C. 28429.  River Bluffs is a hidden gem. You’re in the right place when you see the gatehouse to the River Bluffs community.  Don’t let the gate deter you, the public is always welcome!

Vendors for Saturday, January 5, 2019

Turner Family Farms – Ian and Jessicca will be at the market with the same items our CSA subscription produce box clients received on Thursday (more or less 🙂  carrots with tops, turnips, beets with tops, collards, greens mixes and microgreens, rainbow chard, sweet potatoes green onion, hakurei turnips, and more.

Feast for the Gods – Chefs Alexis and Betsy Fouros are our mainstay at the River Bluffs Farm Market offering Greek and Mediterranean delicacies every week.  They always have their famous spice rubs, cookbooks and baklava, but Alexis is bringing some special treats for the first Saturday of 2019, namely, his saucisson with pistachio nuts and truffles, and his French garlic sausages.  I know he’s bringing one of my favorites, too – Greek lasagna.

Cape Fear Pirate Candy –  Travis Moore is back(!) offering his terrific salsas such as Candied Habanero Bacon Salsa and Honey Kissed Candied Banana Peppers which are truly unique and addictive.  The company has been in the local news and attends several of the other farmer’s markets in the area.  Travis isn’t just an exceptional salsa maker, he’s a talented and creative artist as well, and he’s bringing some of his metalworking pieces that are truly unique.

Vineyards on the Scuppernong – Sarah Barbee is new to the River Bluffs Farm Market, but she wowed a lot of people last Saturday with her family’s selection of wines.  We met her at the Poplar Grove Plantation’s Merry Little Christmas Festival.  In addition to the muscadine wines famous in Eastern North Carolina, Sara offers some exceptional dry wines as well including a Merlot that I highly recommend.

The PVC Bird Lady  – Julie is a Southport resident that creates clever and imaginative bird forms out of PVC.  They are so unique that you just have to come see them for yourself at the market.

Bonardi-Allen Glass Art – Lauren Bonardi- Allen returning, too!  She is an exceptional art-glass maker who has been featured at the Cameron Art Museum.  I’ll get proper pictures of her work for next week’s post.

Will Kinzie is back!  Will is an exceptional local artist who paints in oils, watercolors and charcoals using otherworldly perspectives.  His works are usually of local landscapes and subjects, and while some may want to define the genres as surreal or impressionist, I think his “genre,” like a great guitarist’s tone, is just authentic to his own feel and vision. That’s the best way I can explain it.  He has many unique paintings and artworks right there at the market, but he also accepts commissions.  Please check out his Facebook page (click on his name above) and come see him at our market this Saturday.
